Video: Penn Manor vs. Hempfield PKs

May 14, 2011

MANHEIM – I will preface this by saying that pretty much nobody likes to see a soccer game – particularly a championship game – end in dreaded penalty kicks.

But that’s what happened Saturday at Manheim Central, when Section 1 foes Penn Manor and Hempfield needed PKs to settle the Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ soccer championship match.

The Comets and the Black Knights went toe-to-toe through two halves and two 20-minute overtime sessions. Both teams were starting to drag a little bit, but the action was non-stop. For a 0-0 game, it was mighty entertaining. Plenty of rushes. Plenty of corner-kicks. Plenty of sprawling saves and headers on goal in the box.

But when neither team could dent the back of net after the two OTs – both defenses and both goalies, Penn Manor’s Veronica Willig and Hempfield’s Lauren Trower, were terrific – the game went to the PK phase.

Grabbed my Flip Cam and got a good spot next to the cage and shot the entire PK session. Willig is wearing the funky orange jersey; Trower is wearing the gray jersey. You can hear the PA announcer introducing the shooters as they come up to the line; Hempfield is in white and Penn Manor is in blue.

Katie Breneman won it for Penn Manor on the Comets’ fifth and final attempt. Some nice celebration footage follows. Go crazy, Millersville.

Enjoy.
