WITMER – For the second year in a row, Lampeter-Strasburg senior Jody Sambrick stands alone atop the Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ Triple-A tennis mountain.
The Pioneers’ smooth-hitting lefty repeated as the league’s Triple-A singles champ on Monday afternoon at Conestoga Valley, dispatching longtime rival Wes Fortna from Cedar Crest 6-3, 6-1.
Sambrick, who defeated Conestoga Valley’s Darren Mast in last year’s finals, said afterward that he struggled mightily against Fortna in youth tournaments growing up.
He didn’t struggle Monday; Sambrick earned the first break in the first set and cruised from there. And it was all Sambrick in the second set; using low, deep ground strokes and a powerful first serve, he broke Fortna three times on the way to the gold medal.
Now Sambrick, a Millersville University recruit, will go for another repeat: He’ll try and defend his District 3 Triple-A singles championship, starting Saturday.
Stay tuned.
I chatted with Sambrick about winning back-to-back L-L League singles titles, about his work ethic and how he preps for big tournaments, about his recruiting process and how he landed with the Marauders, and about his expectations heading toward the District 3 and PIAA tournaments.
Enjoy.
