LANCASTER – The Major League Baseball Draft is set for June 6, and the latest scuttlebutt around the Lancaster-Lebanon League is that at least a pair of current stars will hear their names called pretty early on in the proceedings.
Manheim Township senior catcher Cameron Gallagher and Cedar Crest senior outfielder Derek Fisher, both All-State picks last spring and both regulars on the showcase circuit, are on a lot of team’s draft boards.
In a recent USA Today story, Fisher, a sweet-swinging lefty hitter, was ranked 42nd out of the top 50 available prospects for the First-Year Player Draft.
Another scouting service, Perfect Game, has Fisher ranked 17th amongst available prospects.
And yet another scouting service, Baseball America, has Fisher ranked ninth nationally among prospects.
So it sure sounds like Fisher is going to hear his name called early on June 6.
Fisher has accepted a scholarship offer to continue his scholastic and baseball careers at the University of Virginia, so he could end up there – unless he does indeed like what hears on June 6.
Found this really cool piece about Fisher (including some great photo graphics) from ESPN right here.
Fisher hit .440 with nine homers last spring for Cedar Crest. He was even better in the postseason, going 8-for-12 with five dingers and 11 RBI in the playoffs.

Manheim Township senior catcher Cameron Gallagher is off to a hot start this spring for the Blue Streaks
Gallagher’s resume is equally impressive. Coming into this spring he was a Rawlings First-Team All-American and a First-Team All-Atlantic Region pick and he’s a reigning Aflac All-American.
So far this season, Gallagher, a right-handed hitter with plenty of power, is batting a robust .565 (13-for-23) with a double, a homer and 9 RBI for the Blue Streaks.
Not surprisingly, he’s drawn 11 walks already, and his on-base percentage is .686. Gallagher is also 5-for-5 in the stolen-base department.
Gallagher has accepted an athletic scholarship offer to continue his scholastic and baseball careers for East Carolina University.
Gallagher comes from a baseball family.
His dad, Glenn, starred at Manheim Township and played in college for Clemson in the ACC. He went on to coach Franklin & Marshall and Millersville, and now he runs his own baseball school in Lancaster.
Cameron’s big brother, Austin, also was a standout for Manheim Township, and he’s in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system after being drafted in the third round in 2007. He’s currently playing for Rancho Cucamonga, where the third baseman is batting .361 through the Quakes’ first nine games.
The way things are going, it won’t be a shocker if the Gallagher brothers are both playing pro baseball come this time next spring. Fisher, too.
