LANCASTER – The Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association held its yearly shindig in late January, and several L-L League folks were honored.
Two league coaches earned PSCA Coach of the Year awards.
And pair of former L-L League coaches were enshrined in the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Longtime Elco coach Mike Seigfried was named the “AA” boys’ Coach of the Year.
Ironically, Seigfried won the award in his final season; he retired from his post with the Raiders after this past season.
Seigried was Elco’s coach for 26 seasons and the Raiders went 412-192-34 over that stretch, winning nine section crowns, five District 3 titles and three state championships.
Meanwhile, longtime Penn Manor coach Bill Zapata was named the “AAA” girls’ Coach of the Year.
Ironically, Zapata won the award after he resigned his post after he guided the Comets to the state spring championship game; Penn Manor dropped a 1-0 gut-wrencher to Cumberland Valley.
In his 10 seasons with Penn Manor, Zapata’s teams won five section championship, three L-L League titles, a pair of state championships and won 185 games.
The PSCA also honored former Manheim Township coach Ed Journey and former Hempfield coach Al Shuss by inducting them into the Hall of Fame.
Journey and Shuss joined former L-L League coaches Ed Holcroft (Pequea Valley, 1999), Barry Gorman (Elco, 2000), John Fellenbaum (Warwick, 2003), Glenn Hibshman (Cedar Crest, 2004) and Jay Miller (Elco, 2010) in the PSAC Hall of Fame.
Beaver’s Josh Turnley and Cumberland Valley’s Kelly Pizzingrilli (who scored the Eagles’ game-winning goal in the state final last spring vs. Penn Manor) were named PSCA Players of the Year.
