District 3 basketball: 3 L-L League teams advance, 3 are eliminated

February 21, 2012

LANCASTER – There will be a new District 3 “AAA” boys’ basketball champion.

Lancaster Catholic, three days after appearing in the L-L League championship game, was bounced in a round-of-16 game on Tuesday night, falling to Bishop McDevitt 73-61 in Lancaster.

So one year after winning the district title and advancing to the state semifinals, the Crusaders were one-and-done this time around.

Donegal, which opened the season 20-1, ended up losing its final three games in a row after the Indians were knocked off by Palmrya 50-49 in a first-round game in Mount Joy.

The only L-L League survivor in “AAA” was No. 1 seed and Section 3 champ Lampeter-Strasburg, which dusted No. 17 Middletown 57-38 in Lampeter.

All of Tuesday’s District 3 basketball final scores right here.

Up next for L-S is No. 9 Bishop McDevitt, which axed Lancaster Catholic. L-S/McD quarterfinal is Friday at 8 p.m. in Hershey’s Giant Center.

Those two are plenty familiar with one another after meeting in the District 3 football playoffs the last two years.

Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, a pair of L-L League teams marched on with first-round “AAAA” victories on Tuesday, and now they’ll meet in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Manheim Township, the Section 1 champ, cruised past Shippensburg 45-30 in Neffsville, and Section 2 champ Solanco needed double-overtime but held off Harrisburg 60-59 in Quarryville.

Blue Streaks vs. Golden Mares is Friday at 7 p.m. at Penn Manor.

Manheim Township rallied past Solanco 36-33 in an L-L League crossover game on January 25 in Quarryville.

The rematch will have a trip to the district semifinals – and an automatic bid to States – hanging in the balance. The loser goes to the consolation bracket and will need a win to advance to States.

Also Tuesday, Hempfield, which edged Section 1 foe Warwick 36-32 in a preliminary game last Friday, fell at Berks County champ Wilson 42-25 in a first-round game. The Black Knights are eliminated.

One big upset in “AAAA” girls on Tuesday: Reading High, the No. 1 seed, was bounced by No. 17 Cumberland Valley 70-63 in a first-round game.
