WITMER – Monster, monster day for Donegal senior Patrick Moran on Monday.
And he nearly didn’t make it.
Sapped by a cold and flu-like symptoms late last week, the Indians’ determined tennis standout just barely made it through the early rounds of the Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ tennis tournament.
Feeling a tad better Monday – and thanks to a pre-match banana snack delivery from his grandmother – Moran mustered up enough energy to win not one but two L-L League championships on the hardcourts at Conestoga Valley.
The No. 1 seed successfully defended his Double-A singles championship with a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 2 seed Trey Fidler from Elco.
Later, Moran joined forces with sophmore teammate Eric Ebersole, fell behind a set, but rallied and eventually knocked off Lancaster Catholic’s Ryan Bair and Ryan Duschl 13-11 in a heart-pounding super-breaker and captured the Double-A doubles title. Moran and Ebersole were the No. 1 seed in that event.
Interestingly, Moran joined forces with Ebersole’s brother, Mitch, to advance to last year’s L-L League Double-A finale; the Donegal duo fell to Elco’s Freddy Shaak and Fidler in the title match.
So back-to-back singles titles and a doubles crown for Moran, who pulled off that nifty trick Monday while still recovering from being under the weather. Impressive.
I chatted with Moran about his back-to-back L-L League singles victories, about his college decision – he’s doing to the College of Charleston in South Carolina and hopes to walk-on the men’s tennis team after playing club tennis for a year or two – and about his expectations moving forward in the postseason this spring.
Enjoy.
